Senate Bill 469 (Jeanne Hopkins Lucas Act) was recently introduced in honor of longtime friend of the PBA, Senator Jeanne Lucas. Senator Lucas lost her courageous battle with cancer on March 9, 2007. Senator Lucas had previously joined with the PBA in sponsoring Senate Bill 784. Senate Bill 784 would have provided Durham City and County officers with the option to purchase 2 to 4 years of creditable service towards retirement for officers that hold an intermediate to advanced certificate. On the two year anniversary of her death Senator Floyd McKissick, another close friend of the PBA, filed Senate Bill 469 in her honor. Senate Bill 469 mirrors Senate Bill 784 and has been referred to the committee on Pensions Retirement & Aging. The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association is extremely proud of this legislation that serves to honor the legacy of a true friend of Durham County law enforcement officers.
