Running for a Cause: A North Carolina Community Stands
in Support of Law Enforcement
On Saturday, April 16th, 2011, the Police Benevolent
Foundation and the North Carolina PBA sponsored the John
Taylor 5K Recovery Run in Roanoke Rapids, North
Carolina. The event was organized by two of John’s
friends and fellow officers – Joe Puhak and Mike Mosley.
The John Taylor 5K was created to celebrate survival and
honor the sacrifices of officers everywhere. John
Taylor, the officer for whom the event was named, was an
avid runner prior to sustaining life threatening
injuries, and he was able to participate in his first
race since the traumatic experience that left him
clinging to his life last November.
The inaugural event was a tremendous success as scores
of runners lined up to participate in both the one mile
fun run and the 5K race. Several media outlets were on
hand to capture the impact of the race and celebrate
unity with the community. Event sponsor, Aaron’s
Rentals, came out to show there support by not only
providing a mascot to cheer on race participants, they
also served water and gave lots of prizes and fun items
to all the participants and family members.
In the end, more than $6500 was raised to support fallen
officers. Dozens of racers received awards for their
race times. Most importantly, the community was able to
gather in support of local heroes, community safety, and
celebrate life.
The Foundation and the NCPBA would
like to thank the following sponsors for their support.
