The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association teams up with Outback Steakhouse for a night of food, fun, football, and charity

Fundraiser will benefit the Police Benevolent Foundation and Fredreich's Ataxia Research Alliance

The North Carolina Division of the Southern States PBA and Outback Steakhouse has combined its efforts to raise funds for two very worthy causes - The Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) and The PBF’s Fallen Officer Fund. Cops and Kids!

The Cops & Kids fundraiser is being conducted on Monday, September 12, 2011 4:30PM-10PM at Outback Steakhouse at 7500 Creedmoor Road in Raleigh, NC. Thanks to Outback’s generous support and community investment, the Foundation and FARA are able to share information about their respective causes, and 100% of the proceeds raised at this event help to continue the remarkable efforts.

Over the past several years, the Foundation has provided more than $1 million in direct aid and support to the families of officers who have been killed in the line of duty. These funds have allowed the survivors to resume their daily lives without having an additional financial burden placed upon them. The PBF’s Fallen Officer Fund replaces at least one year of the officer’s annual salary; however, in some cases, local communities have rallied behind our fundraising efforts and provided funding in excess of the annual salary. Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder. About one in 50,000 people in the United States have Friedreich's ataxia. Onset of symptoms can vary from childhood to adulthood. Childhood onset of FA is usually between the ages of 5 and 15 and tends to be associated with a more rapid progression. Late on-set FA (LOFA) can occur anytime during adulthood. The Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) is a national, public, 501(c)(3), non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to curing Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) through research. FARA grants and activities provide support for basic and translational FA research, pharmaceutical/ biotech drug development, clinical trials, and scientific conferences. FARA also serves as a catalyst, between the public and scientific community, to create worldwide exchanges of information that drive medical advances. For more information, go to www.cureFA.org.

According to NCPBA Division President Randy Byrd, "We are so proud to be partnering with Outback to create awareness and support for the PBF and FARA. There has always been a special bond between officers and children and this event offers a wonderful opportunity to support both through this event. We hope everyone will take the time to come out and enjoy the evening as we work to support officers and fight a disease that affects so many children."

The Cops and Kids fundraiser is a night of food, fun, and football that features a live raffle of: a Dan Marino (autographed) football and a Carolina Hurricanes (autographed) hockey stick. Together the PBF and FARA can make a difference. If you want to help the cause, you can text 'COPS KIDS' to 85944, and a $10 donation will be made in your name and added to your next cell phone bill.
